Building the Pequod model ship for the TV mini series, Moby Dick.
This was a wonderful build and my first model ship of this style and age. I had to learn how rigging works.
As always with what I get to work on, budget was tight and they decided that they just want the masts, sails and rigging and we only see the model when looking up.
As it turned out, the entire ship was needed and so a very hurried hull was built by a company close to the shoot.
We started the build on a steel frame and everything was built out of timber as would be with the real ship.
It was based on the Endeavour as this is what the live action was to be shot on. I got to climb all over the Endeavour to get reference shots, right up to the highest parts of the masts.
The masts and yards were all carved out of dowel. There is a good series of reference books to go from so we got this pretty accurate.
As with model ships. the sails are very hard to get right on this scale. When full of air, ours looked pretty good.
At the end of the story, the Pequod sinks and so our model is somewhere at the bottom of Melbourne harbour. We also made a simple maquette of Moby Dick, as a study model.
